Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass will be returning for a fourth film in the Bourne series.

According to Variety:

The biggest risks are in their efforts at landing new franchises, something that, save for the “Bourne” series, has eluded U for quite some time. “Evan Almighty” was but the latest in a series of disappointments that also include the previous regime’s “Van Helsing” and “King Kong.”

On tap is a fourth “Bourne” movie, but their slate is full of efforts to either launch new franchises or resurrect old ones. The latter group include revivals of “The Mummy,” “Hellboy” and “The Incredible Hulk,” as well as another “The Fast and the Furious.”

The Bourne Ultimatum leaps, scampers, scraps and drives its way into the pantheon of all-time great action movies. But the third and best chapter of the amnesiac spy saga might have more going on above the shoulders than on the streets, sidewalks and rooftops. This movie is alive with the thrill of thought and the courage of a most timely moral compass.

Universal’s The Bourne Ultimatum grabbed $25.5M on Friday, which should translate to a staggering $72M opening weekend. That’s easily the best opening in the franchise, topping The Bourne Identity’s $27.1M and The Bourne Supremacy’s $52.5M. This also marks the best opening weekend of Matt Damon’s career.

2002’s Bourne Identity, starring Matt Damon and directed by Doug Liman, opened with a very solid $27.1M en route to a $121.6M domestic haul. Bloody Sunday director Paul Greengrass stepped in for 2004’s Bourne Supremacy, and his frenetically-charged style transformed the franchise into a phenomenon. Supremacy grabbed $52.5M in its opening frame and finished at $176.2M in the US. Now Greengrass, fresh from his Oscar nomination for last year’s United 93, returns with Damon for what will purportedly be the final Bourne movie.
