So, let’s begin with what I DON’T want to happen.
Michael cannot die. That would be so utterly pointless. Let me give you an example. For those of you who watch Lost, I recently learned that they had intended to kill Jack (Matthew Fox’s character) very early in season 1. However, shortly before filming the pilot the studio realized that it would be damaging to the fans to become invested in that character only to have him die off so quickly. So imagine that, ABC didn’t want to kill off a character after only 1 or 2 episodes and he went on to become a main character. Think about how much the audience has invested in Michael. Killing him off after 4 seasons would be a horrible mistake. Giving him a tumor and having him get surgery is acceptable, because despite these trials, I am absolutely convinced that he will survive. But killing him is unacceptable, in the same way that killing Sara was a very bad idea. What was the point of that? Was saving her life not enough motivation for Michael? In all honesty, we have to wonder whether the “death” of Sara in season 3 was a catalyst for declining ratings. We don’t really know, but I do know that killing the main character of a show is not the ending I want. It would completely invalidate the rest of the series.
You cannot end the series in the same manner you ended seasons 1 though 3. Remember the Fox River 8 running off into the field at the end of season 1, or Michael walking into Sona at the end of season 2, or Michael driving off with vengeance on the brain at the end of season 3? All of those endings were unfinished and they were acceptable as season endings, because we knew that the show would return to finish off that logical train of thought. But you cannot leave things unfinished in a series ending. Anyone remember Buffy? In the last episode her hometown was destroyed and there were questions about what they would do next, but there was a measure of finality in the series. She had defeated her worst enemy and the hellmouth was closed. If you’re going to end a show, you need closure. Otherwise, people will always remember it as that show that didn’t really have an ending.
